How To Focus

You have focused before, you can focus again

When Have I Focused?
It is also called "being in the zone", Or the "flow" state

A state where you don't remember to eat. don't remember time. don't remember your phone either.

You become one with the work itself

Does Flow State Even Exist?
Brain has a limited supply of glucose

It uses that constantly to be aware of surroundings, check threats and follow tasks (specially when multitasking)

Now, In a flow state, all of that energy is given to one task instead of checking threats or tasks
Method 1: Declutter Mind

What does mental clutter look like?

Brain sending reminders for wrong tasks at wrong time.

happens when it thinks you will forget the task or perhaps you can actually do it now even if you can't

example? brain reminding you to buy something at home, but not reminding when at the store

fastest way to stop brain from wasting energy on reminders, is to let it know "I will remember it"

use a to-do list or have people to keep you in check

"To-Do lists Don't Even Work!"
Don't make a To-Do list that goes-

  • Onion
  • Dog
  • Script
  • Car

  • ANYTHING your mind keeps reminding you off, write it down in the list

But it must be written with meaning.

Verb Item/Task — Next Visible Action To Do It.

    Or

Verb Item/Task — Next Visible Action To Do It — What It Looks Like When Done

  • Buy Onion — Pick Up Grocery Bag
  • Feed Dog — Pick Up Dog Food
  • Write Script — Find My Bag With Notebook — Go Through 5 Times
  • Repair Car — Find Car Keys - Until Midnight Or Car Working

  • KEEP checking the list!!! This only works because you send a signal to your mind "that work is done, don't remind me"

but if it knows work won't be done or even looked at when you write it, it will keep reminding you

(using pricipals of getting things done)
Why Is There A "Verb Item/Task"?
Remember, brain has limited energy. Every time you look at the list, It shouldn't have to recalculate what it means.

  • Buy Onion
  • Feed Dog
  • Write Script
  • Repair Car

  • Way better, quicker.
Why Is There A "First Visible Action To Do It"?
REMEMBER, brain has limited energy. Every time you look at the list-

Brain asks "What will I have to do to start this? ah yeah get the bag... How about this one? Find the dog...Then maybe I should do the other-"

Goal is to spend all energy ON task, not thinking about tasks.
  • Buy Onion — Pick Up Grocery Bag
  • Feed Dog — Pick Up Dog Food
  • Write Script — Find My Bag With Notebook
  • Repair Car — Find Car Keys

  • Why Is There A "What It Looks Like When Done?"
    Modern tasks are "information work"

Writing a Script is not the same as "picking a box, carrying it, putting it down"

When does work begin? When you think about the story for a script? Or when you sit down?

When does it end? You can keep refining it forever.

This is why, end must be clear. Whether a specific time limit, or a specific amount of iterations.
  • Buy Onion — Pick Up Grocery Bag
  • Feed Dog — Pick Up Dog Food
  • Write Script — Find My Bag With Notebook — Go Through 5 Times
  • Repair Car — Find Car Keys - Until Midnight Or Car Working

  • remember, you can mix and merge both forms

My Brain Still Reminds Me Of Things When I Work
If the task is actionable, it must go in the ToDo list

If It can only be done at a certain place, make another list that you check at that place

If it is not actionable, you still write it down somewhere (this is why journaling works)

KEEP checking the list!!! This only works because you send a signal to your mind "that work is done, don't remind me"

but if it knows work won't be done if only written, it will keep reminding you
    Method 2: Get Energy Supply
As said earlier, Brain has limited energy

Having something with glucose assists in thinking clearly

That's why sweet things are given as goodluck

Method 3: Make Safe Organised Environment
If the mind has to worry about some danger

Or guess where the pencil is for 5 minutes

You will not enter flow state

To become one with the work itself, create safety

    and organized work space

I don’t have time to make lists.
A short list saves time by reducing mental clutter and indecision.

I don’t want to live by lists, My creativity is reduced
Lists free up mental space, helping you get things done and spend time exploring more.

Method 2 says have glucose, what if I become diabetic?
You might, that's why Method 1 and 3 exist

What if my list never ends?
Focus on the next action of any one task, delegate, or defer less urgent tasks.

I keep forgetting to update my list.
Set a habit of daily or weekly reviews. Use reminders if needed.

How do I stop procrastinating on tasks?
If you procrastinate, the actionable step isn't small enough. Start with small, easy tasks, break big ones down, and remove distractions.

    Paper or digital to-do lists?
Choose what fits your style, anything works.
